Welcome, and may I respectfully ask a question: Is the English language the official language of India? (in the sense that it is mandatory in all schools as a matter of either (1) culture (private schools) or (2) government policy in publicly funded schools)

This question arose last night as I listened to an Indian government official speak on TV. As I listened to his eloquent speech, I wondered also if the English language was only the language of the upper classes, or was it now the prevailing language of the masses?

I look forward to your participation in the forum. I've been interested in Indian culture ever since I read a wonderful historical novel about India's independence entitled FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT. I don't remember the author's name.

Ironically, I did speak with an Indian woman of previous acquaintance (as our dogs romped, peed, and sniffed butts at the dog park) several weeks ago. She was familiar with the book.

Freedom at Midnight written by Dominiue Lapierre and Larry Collins describes the happenings in India during 1947/ 48, the short period before Independence and after Independence.

The official/ national language of India is Hindi.
English came to India through foreign rule and for some reasons has become the dominant language in the country. There are many regional languages in India. In offices it is english which is commonly used. Most people living in cities know their regional language plus english.
