'Among the peaks of romantic cinema': Les Enfants du paradis.
This long, romantic recreation of life – high, low and theatrical – in 1830s Paris, newly restored, has an outstanding cast headed by Pierre Brasseur and Jean-Louis Barrault as rival actors, one a Shakespearean star, the other a brilliant mime, and Arletty a much sought-after courtesan. It was made in two parts because films produced during the German occupation had to last under 90 minutes, and the film set out to celebrate the indomitable French spirit and assert cultural pride at a point when the humiliating defeat of 1940 was being replaced by a new if dubious self-respect created by the resistance.

Wonderful, wonderful film!

Sometimes you need to lie and make fantasy to tell the truth.

Apocalypse Now i demonstrates the desolation and horror of war far more effectively than any other film.

It shows war in the light of theatre, pantomime, addiction, horror, fear, hopelessness, waste and futility.

... oh and great music too.

that's interesting, very interesting in relation to the book i've been reading, 'The Octopus'. especially in relation to what i just read in it last night. even down to the green leaves on white in the video.

also, today, driving home from work with a co-worker with me that i was dropping off, she all of a sudden says, 'i've got someone who wants to meet you'.. i rolled my eyes inside, and didn't want to be rude, but right away, i say, 'nooooooo'

etc.

she says things in reply, such as, 'well he's got alot of money' 'just go out to dinner with him' 'looking for permanent relationship' lots of things

i appreciated that she went out of her way and was trying to set us up, i thought that was nice, but, no.

i have my reasons, reasons that haven't even been mine, reasons, that aren't mine, and i sense that, i could be wrong, but i think i will be one of those people who 'die alone'.

that's alright.
