What you are seeing is a cultural icon, the churchs and hollywoods view. Jesus was more likely a little hook-nosed, swarthy, mediterranean fella.

I think it the Romans who nailed Christ. Although its unlikely they used nails, to expensive, he probably got crucified in the usual way, with ropes.
