To balance out the 'heavies' I like to read the quirkies.
We mentioned a few on the 'old' PN forum, like 'the Thought Gang' by Tibor Fischer.

I've just started reading ' Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' - Paul Torday.
Written in a diary-style, plus emails and correspondence - it offers whimsy, reflections on life and belief in belief.
Love is there, somewhere between the salmon, Scotland and the Yemen.

So far, so good.
I caught this one by accident in the local library.
Casting waders to the wind, does anyone else here have any delicacies they would like to share ? And it don't have to be anything 'fishy', just maybe a bit of a tale with fun.

Once I get 'in' to the diary-style I really enjoy it.
First one I remember reading was 'Daddy Long Legs'.

Quirky may not be the word for it, but I have been reading How to Think Straight About Psychology by Keith E. Stanovich (ISBN 0-205-51265-8 ) in the Christmas.

It gives you advice on avoiding traps when facing 'science' in the media. Some ofcourse is science and some is not. In connection with Philosophy of Science it is quite a good book. It also shows some features, though only sketchy, how psychology operates. It may not be as good as proper philosophy, but still the same.

I looked it up on Amazon and it has a wealth of positive comments.
One, however, was slightly critical and mentioned 2 other books which may be worth a look-see.

Sagan's ' The Dragons of Eden' and Jacques Barzun's ' the House of Intellect'.

I haven't read any of these authors.
Anyone care to comment ?
