Philosophy Now Forum

I'm 18 years old, and I am going into my first year at the University of Pittsburgh's Arts and Sciences program. Philosophy has been my passion throughout high school, and my goal is to obtain my PhD and begin teaching. I also want to own a book store someday

On my own time, some of my favorite philosophers include: Seneca, Nietzsche (Thus Spoke Zarathustra and The Gay Science are my favorites), Foucault, Thoreau, and Žižek.

My family is not very satisfied with my chosen major, but I've never been more excited. I've just subscribed to Philosophy Now, I think it will be a great supplement to my usual reading.

It's great to be able to find a community with so many people that enjoy this art as much as I do!

Out of interest, what would your family have preferred you to study?

Something that would make me a million dollars a year. I don't resent them for it, it's only natural for them to want that for me.

However, I watch my dad with his very well paying job; he is happy once every two weeks when he receives his pay check. I'd rather be happy for two weeks and slightly disappointed over my salary.

If there was a degree course that guaranteed you earnings of a million a year I think it would be a tad oversubscribed
