Preaching for the Last Days?

THE CALLING
I was thinking about what my message would be if I were preaching as though we were living in the last days. Since I am eighty-nine years old, it is more than a possibility that I am right. My last days are here. But I am not thinking about those “last days.” I am thinking about these last days, now, today.

Mankind has been making predictions about the end of the world since long before we had any real understanding of what such an ending might actually look like. Today, however, we have something they did not have. We have modern knowledge. We have the sciences, and with them we can see possibilities that are no longer based entirely upon imagination.

There is clear scientific evidence that the order we depend upon is not permanent. The contents of our civilization are becoming increasingly difficult to hold together. There comes a point when the balance between order and chaos is disturbed, when the scales begin to weigh more heavily toward chaos. This is part of the natural order of all things, and I believe it applies to humanity as well.

I believe we have reached a point in our development that was a foregone conclusion, designed by our Creator and set into motion by the One who knew the end from the beginning. Like all the other laws of nature that He initiated, the law of entropy was given its direction by God. From the beginning, its eventual result was already contained within the process. Chaos began its inexorable movement toward fruition.

The question is not whether change will occur. The question is how much chaos it will take before our ability to maintain social order finally breaks down.
At the “beginning” of all things, everything existed in its highest state of order. But with the first “movement,” the path was opened. From that point forward, everything begins to come apart. Everything divides.

A giant rock gives us a simple demonstration. It begins as an ordered mass, and over time it is reduced toward another state. Every time a molecule leaves its surface and becomes something other than the rock, the rock has undergone another small act of division. Time, weather, wind, water, and human activity continue the process until eventually the rock becomes smaller pieces, sand, or dust. We call this process entropy. In one sense, it is what defines change over time.

So, forgetting the old-time imaginings of “the end,” whether from ancient Egypt, Biblical times, or anywhere else, let us look instead at the conditions we can actually observe today.

What signs of decay should we look for? What do the remains of a deteriorating order look like? Does it seem possible that we are reaching the limits of our ability to thrive within the present state of chaos? How much more can society absorb before the order we depend upon begins to collapse?

The end will not come simply because of the stupidity of humanity, although human stupidity has certainly provided fertilizer for its growth. What will ultimately be on exhibit is something more fundamental, our inability to govern ourselves. We are no longer faced with the relatively small task of governing a tribe, a village, a city, a state, or even a country. We face the task of maintaining order within a world whose growth has expanded beyond any individual human ability to control.

When we took upon ourselves the job of governing a one-world population, we stepped beyond the natural bounds of human leadership. No one person, whether King, Emperor, or God figure, no single government, no one religion, and no group of people created with human intent can bring together that which has already been shredded by division.

The state of “Order,” at Creation, contained no mechanism capable of stopping, slowing, or reversing the eventual movement toward chaos. Chaos is part of the end plan.
Only Satan has been given the power, by God's allowance, to attempt to establish his kingdom on earth.

And so, if I were called upon to give a message in these last days, this would be my message:
Pay attention.

God is speaking to us. He is offering love. He is offering Himself. He is using His Words. So, pay attention.

Love your brother. Love your neighbor. Love the stranger. Love your enemy.
Because it is impossible to love God while holding back the small measure of love you possess from another human being.

His words will not remain hidden if your heart is true enough to see them.
That is my calling. Not to predict the day or hour. Not to tell anyone what they must believe. Simply to say that these may be the last days, and if they are, there is something far more important than trying to determine when the end will come.
Look to your soul.
Today.
While time allows.
