Our current issue (current for another few days, anyway!) is Philosophy Now Issue 173.

Its theme is Islam and Philosophy. Several of the major thinkers from the medieval golden age of Islamic philosophy show up – like Al-Farabi and Al-Ghazali – in articles exploring the connection of their ideas to modern debates on AI and the nature of consciousness; on love and emptiness; and on law and reform. Additionally, Yossra Hamouda dissects and criticizes the religious concept of sacrifice and Rebwar Fatah compares Hegel’s concept of alienation with that of a 12th century Sufi poet, Attar of Nishapur.

Elsewhere in this issue, Ray Tallis lampoons Heidegger’s picture of personhood (Dasein) for not paying enough attention to the fact that we have physical bodies. There are articles on hypocrisy, on comedy, on idleness, on narratives and conspiracy theories, and on Schopenhauer’s curiously compelling comparison of human beings with porcupines. We have a ‘Brief Life’ of Plato’s rival Xenophon, a fellow student of Socrates who also wrote dialogues. Finally, there are book and film reviews, an Existential Comics strip about Kantian ethics, letters, news, and more.
