I agree with Tallis when he doubts that any great philosophical insights will come from psychedelic experiences. It may feel like you've made a profound insight, but that usually doesn't survive post trip. I would qualify this with a recommendation that he try LSD or Psylocibin anyways. About sixty years ago, I took LSD, and went from being a flaming atheist to being an agnostic with a tilt towards Spinozan panentheism. It's the experience of seeing everything connected, of seeing hopes and fears taking visual shape, of music affecting our body in a profound way, of seeing the beauty in every single detail of the world. It is very Blakean, in the sense that for a short time our minds are opened wide in a way that transcends our everyday life. It's the closest thing to a "religious experience" that most people will ever have. The thing is, it doesn't lead us to being more creative or more perceptive, it simply shows us the possibilities out there. Nothing follows automatically. After that, it's up to us to do something about it, to make some of those possibilities real, if we dare.
