... wait ... a RANDOM book? I'd like to see that. You can't prove that anything in the world is actually random. Can you prove your book selection method is random? You'd win a Nobel prize if you could do that. At best, you might have a method that's
epistemologically random; that is, unknowable by us, but ultimately deterministic. Coin flips, dice rolls, and perhaps the low-order bit of the femtosecond timestamp of the next neutrino to hit your detector share that property.
Surprised such a high-toned philosophy mag would make such an elementary error.
The word you were looking for is
arbitrary. You're going to send them an arbitrary book, not a random one.
