Noam Chomsky will turn 96 on December 7 of this year. According to his current wife, he had a stroke last year leaving part of his body paralyzed. She says he still watches the news and although one of his arms is paralyzed, he still throws up the other one in frustration and anguish when he sees the extraordinarily troubling news on TV these days.

Chomsky has been an advocate of cooperation and peaceful coexistence between all peoples. It's very saddening that he is drawing toward the end of his days here on Earth with us and that we have come to where we are now, with the specter of strife and destruction (and the suffering that comes with it) spreading across the world. I can't imagine anything that must break his heart more than seeing the world descend into the darkness we seem to be headed toward.

Before we lose Professor Chomsky to history, it would be nice if we could all pull ourselves out of the current crisis (if only to bring peace in gratitude to a kind soul who has devoted his life to the universal welfare of the species; humanity--and by extension to all life on Earth).

I'm sorry to hear of your experience with Harbal. Did the two of you ever meet physically or was it entirely over the Internet that you knew each other?

In the days that this is being written you adult human beings have not pulled "yourselves" out of the 'current' crisis' for your very own children's sake So, asking adults to do it for just one older human beings is a bit much.

Let's see.

The President-elect of the US has the emotional and mental maturity of a child. A boy who has repeatedly exhibited the traits of an extremely selfish narcissistic bully with no scruples whatsoever. A boy who has little to no understanding about anything other than how to manipulate others through demagoguery. A boy that throws a tantrum when he can't get his way. A boy who has access to weapons of mass destruction. A boy who has shown he is willing to sell the future for short-term gains. A boy who has repeatedly sexually assaulted women and bragged about it. A boy who has repeatedly, lied, cheated and stolen to get what he wants. A convicted felon.

The majority of people in the US voted for this boy. The majority of people in the US like this boy. People like people like themselves.

I didn't know that Chomsky had a stroke and paralysis. However, I did know that he was in some way because he was going to be guest speaker on 'The Philosophy Forum'. A thread of questions had been prepared for him to answer and he had to withdraw before responding. Everyone there was disappointed but there was understanding that he had a health problem.

His writings are very important, although I have not read all of them, especially as he writes so much. However, in spite of his writings, the world has not taken enough heed of the concerns of humanity. As far as I see, the world is in the worst mess it has ever been in. The problem of climate change has escalated beyond what was feared and the problem of wars seem really serious. I have seen a number of news headlines about being on the brink of World War 3. It is hard to know if that is true or scaremongering by the media for political ends.

In England, life seems so much worse since lockdown. It was getting hard for about 5 years before but so much has got worse since. There is so much poverty and homelessness and it feels like it is becoming a third world country. I do be that the pandemic was real but so many changes seem to have introduced in the processes of lockdown. Also, in England and many other countries, there seems to be authoritarianism bordering onto totalitarianism.

A1 seems to have changed so much, affecting the world of work so much. In some countries, the idea of a universal income has been introduced. However, in England, the benefit system is punitive. In particular, it seems to threaten the most vulnerable, especially those with mental health problems and disabilities.

There is increasing attempt to force the most ill to work. This is connected to the way so many people are off work due to poor mental health. Apart from this arising as people are more inclined to admit to problems, it is also likely to be related to the way in which life has become so stressful. The pressure to find work for many is just going to make people more and more unwell, especially if they are struggling with poverty too. The media is also promoting such negative attitudes towards mental illness, which increases stigma rather than greater understanding.
