Describe one of your favourite places

One of mine is a little village called Flamborough in Yorkshire, which I've been to quite a few times. It's very near the coast, and I've always loved the seaside, but thankfully, it's not full of tourists. It also has a lot of interesting history and folklore associated with it, including a huge Bronze Age earthwork called Dane's Dyke. The village holds a Viking Fire Festival, which used to take place on New Year's Eve, though they've apparently now moved it to summer, which rather defeats the point, I think.
A few years ago, camping with a friend, we had a very interesting time chatting to locals in one of the village pubs, called the Royal Dog and Duck, and hearing all their stories, including ones about ghosts and other weird goings on. I think this is one of the most important things about visiting somewhere, namely, talking to the people who actually live there, to get a proper feel for the place. If you don't do that then you might as well be anywhere.

That explains my need to not be anywhere else.

Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas, at the edge of the city at the base of the Escarpment. There the wind fills dry water routes with fine sand scoured from the soft red stones that glow in the sun so clearly that one cannot gauge their distance away, a distance between here and there that used to be Mojave desert but now is filled with rows of homes and a highway encircling the city. On cloudy days sometimes the sky directly above the cropping of red rocks is clear, like an invisible wall is keeping away the clouds. The scoured sand on the desert below the vortex is hourglass fine and on a sun-hot morning, in the shadows that survive the night, the sand feels so cool against skin, sand untouched by humans, but that was back before the big population explosion and now there are likely signs and rules and admission prices to keep it all in order and under control, which would be a shame because it was a quiet and empty place when the wind took a pause, where wild horses and burros would roam. The fragrances are distinctive, concentrated bursts from desert plants dried in the heat, lots of spiky plants looking for a ride to somewhere else if you brush against them.

This rock formation in San Jose. The neighborhood to the south and the golf course to the left didn't exist in 1990.
Me and a couple friends unofficially ran away from home and attempted to live at this rock formation. That spot with the X was where we made camp. Duddint look big in the image but those rocks were yuge.
One morning i awoke and when i sat up, i see my friend running after a small herd of deer with a spear about fifty yards south of that spot. It was like something out of lord of the flies. He's got his shirt tied around his head and the deer are running in a big circle instead of making a b-line outta there. It was like they were fuckin with em. He was fat too. Omg it was so funny. Round and round he goes. I lit up a camel light and just sat there on my sleeping bag watching this beautiful thing.
Well we ended up abandoning the camp and going home becuz somebody stole all our shit when we were at the mall arcade. Got my brand new moccasin boots, boom box and all my led zeppelin and pink floyd CDs too.
One day i will go back to that place and reflect on my life. And if it's trespassing now, i don't give a damn. Those rocks belong to me.

Sounds like a place of great natural power, completely different from the sort of environment that we have in the UK. Sad to hear of the encroaching city, though. That is indeed something that's all too familiar here too, unfortunately.

A cluster of large boulders and rocks with little caves and crevices spread about. Situated in the golden hills of San Jose. No woods or forest anywhere... just trees and clumps of bushes here and there. Picture in your head what you imagine when you think of Stonehenge to get a general idea of the rocks.

Sounds very nice. Just the sort of place to run away to.

I suspect it's quite hot there, too.

Oh no. San Jose - at least back then before unmitigated capitalist industry turned the earth into an oven - had an average temperature of 70 degrees fahrenheit with little to no humidity, year 'round. And I think it rained twice in the eight months i was there.

That's 21C. Still a bit warm for my liking, to be honest, but not as bad as I was imagining, for California. Even Canada was a bit too hot when I was there.

Hey anybody else have any favorite places?
