And yes, 'they' and 'them' can be used in the singular in a very specific way i.e. when the sex of the person is unknown or irrelevant. But that is a decision for the person USING it to make. It's not something you can ORDER another person to do, ESPECIALLY not when it's grammatically nonsensical in the context. These entitled, narcissistic arseholes are fascists at best.

The respect is usually for age, but it can also be for other customary reasons, such as assuring a stranger that the situation they are in with you the stranger, even if it be a brief encounter, is civilized and thus safe. Any personal indictment of a continent one imagines through the lens of sensationalized media bias is irrelevant to the customs therein, especially since it's often demonstrated that the moronic affliction has no borders.

Female military officers are called, “Ma’am.” If there is a protocol for addressing a cross-dressing military officer, there's likely a punishment for infractions other than female foot stamping and ignorant female insults, which are personal spectacles rather than juice.
