Economy or Ecology
Economics is a human artifice. The world we have is not an economy, it is a global and localised ecology. The only credit and debit of significance is ecological. An airliner spewing CO2 is a debit. Trees are a credit in their ecological niches. Offsetting one against the other is dangerous humbug. An ever increasing human population and technology is a debit. Human population limited within its ecological niche in balance with other species is a credit.

Why wouldn't we be hardwired to interpreted both systems using pretty much the same neuro-circuits?

Ecology has primacy over economy. Human species exists in ecology. Economy is just transactions between humans, a far smaller thing. It's an aberration when economy starts to overpower ecology.
