a Detective Kropotkin case...

this ''case'' I have been working on for decades....
and it's called, "What does it mean to be human?"
Shakespeare once wrote:
''Human being's reason is noble, their faculties infinite, their
forms and movements fast and admirable, their actions angelic,
their understanding godlike''
but look around you, or if you have the courage, look inside of you,
and see what you really believe.... we human beings are a mass of
contradictions... within an hour, you might see one human being
be kind, be evil, murder someone or commit an act of compassion...
to sacrificing oneself for another...
So, given all of these possibilities, how are we to understand what
it means to be human? as I have stated before, I hold that we humans,
we are on a journey, from being animal to being human... or to say it
another way.... from being fido to being god...
for me, it doesn't matter how we got started on this road of becoming,
of becoming fully human... what matters is that we seek that goal
of becoming....
so, what is the "final" goal of becoming human? that is a question we can
face once we have decided upon what it means to be human...
Aristotle wrote, as his first words in his book, "Metaphysics"
"All men by nature desire to know"
but even a cursory look at human beings tells us, that this isn't true...
for many, knowledge is a curse to be avoided...many who are religious hold in
faith before reason....that the only true path to god lays in having faith,
not in having reason....and yet, the entire engagement of philosophy
during the Middle Ages was an attempt to unite faith and reason...
for example, Aquinas entire oeuvre was an attempt to unite faith
and reason....as was virtually all the medieval philosophers...
so what is a possible definition of a "human being?"
I would go with this.... a "A needs base creature"
We are, animals, this is our heritage.. we begin as animals...
if we fail to understand this, we will fail to understand what
human beings are....we are needs base creatures...
we must, must have food, water, shelter, education,
health care, as bodily needs and as psychological needs
we must have love, safety/security, esteem, a sense of
belonging...we can explain much of the history of us, of human beings
and the history of societies and civilizations, by noting that drive
to fulfill our needs as one of the basic drivers of human beings.
individually and collectively.... history, biology, science,
politics, sociology.. as means to understand our needs and
how the drive to achieve those needs drive us...
look at history and the story of people like Napoleon or
Alexander to attempt to conquer the world... those attempts
at conquest is simple an attempt to meet a need...
both personal and collective need for acquisition...
for having more of something... we see this in the need for
having more money, fame, power, material possessions, titles...
the drive for more...the attempt to conquer the world comes under
this heading of seeking the baubles of existence...
we human beings, we are need's driven creatures...
that might be the best explanation of what a human being is...
much of our daily existence is seeking the basic necessities of
being human.. of seeking food, water, shelter and the psychological
needs of love and esteem...tell me friend, what did you do yesterday?
I will bet that most of your day yesterday was spent on seeking out
your needs for fame or food or titles or material possessions or esteem....
I spend my day at work... thus I was seeking to bring in money, to gain
food, and the other essentials of existence... as we do almost
every single day of our existence...if I go to a bar, I might be seeking
to find love or at lease companionship... another need we attempt
to meet...
think of your daily routine and note how much time you spend on
trying to acquire your needs, both physical and emotional needs...
this seeking of needs in fact define what we do everything single day...
and for some, the need to acquire knowledge drive us,
myself included...
a substantial portion of human existence is an attempt to fulfill
our needs....we are needs base creatures...
that is how I would define a human being.......
ok, so now what?
