That Night

That night I learned to play the violin,
the moonlight seemed to dance upon the floor.
The ghost of Paganini drifted in.
He floated there, just looking on in awe.

My bow flashed back and forth across the strings.
The instrument obeyed my every whim.
The music soared on fine, majestic wings.
While Paganini’s face grew e’er more grim.

I played until my worn out fingers bled.
I played until the room began to spin.
I fell exhausted down upon my bed.
That night I learned to play the violin.

I sometimes wonder what kind of sound I would be able to get out of a violin. I like to imagine it would be a perfect note rather than the horrible screech most people make :)

You might be like me, and go from beginner to virtuoso all in one night. :)

I think it would be indistinguishable from the sound of you strangling your cat. :)

The Scarlatti Tilt

“It’s very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who’s learning to play the violin.” That’s what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

The violin does have a wailing sound - perfect instrument to play on solemn occasions like death vigils, etc.

That night I tried the ukulele
Moonlight hid behind the door
The ghost of Formby tried but failed he
Couldn’t staunch a round guffaw

My fingers fumbled hither, thither
The instrument in pain retracted
Perhaps I should have tried the zither
Or had another tooth extracted

I played until my hurt ears bled
And even should I practise daily
I know that till the day I’m dead
I’ll never best the ukulele

Clearly none of these poets know how musicians become musicians!
