When boundary conditions interact, emergent properties are what occur in the overlap. It's identical to relationship for all intents and purposes.

Properties are factors of materials, relations and processes. Differences in all of those things make property differences. "Emergence" only makes sense as a way of talking about properties due to differences in these three things.
