Philosophy is the moniker for all searches for understanding which rely upon reasoned certainty. As it developed, rigor was found by way of logic, aka critical thinking. At some point that search became rigorous enough that truth claims could be made on empirical matters "for all intents and purposes", and <poof> science was born.
