Fair and Equal
Use of the term ‘fair and equal’ in our present form of society is near to being a contradiction.
The rather vague term ‘fair’ may be employed with respect to any society within its particular ethos. It barely means anything but a universal application of the law, without being arbitrary.
Equality may apply to a society based on the autonomous individual, not concerned for others or society as a whole. It may also apply to an altruist society with the emphasis on society.
What is fondly called the capitalist economy and society is intrinsically one of self-interest, with concern for others a matter of mere charity. It is a form of the autonomous society in which people work for financial profit and in doing so generate wealth in various forms, including real estate, which ultimately centralises ownership and power.
In the altruist society, people do not work for personal profit but for society and concern for others – as may a doctor or nurse today wish to do, and invention or innovation is for the same purpose. Commerce is therefore owned by society as against the individual or the central government.
