anthropic compromise?

Not sure quite where this goes.. epistemology?

In order that the complex thing works, many many things must be just right. Therefore things being just right is the status quo. - optimism
In order that the complex thing works, many many things must be just right. So it's extremely likely for it to fail at any second. - pessimism

Both are reasonable conclusions but since the lead in opposite directions, both must be right in some unclear way, or one must be wrong. This also has implications for the anthropic principle.
