The Economy
Ethics is based on values and there are no absolutes only compromises between the shared basic values.
We can have an economy that is reductionist, and each part stands on its own, or unitary, or holistic.
Commerce may serve the government and be created or removed according to its purposes.
It may serve its owners and if any concern collapses then the owners and employees are in one common ruin, together with such impact as there is on the wider economy.
Or commerce can serve society and be managed accordingly. There is an example this day of an airline going into liquidation, with its shareholders bearing some loss, with employees perhaps even greater loss. If this airline were one of a few or many serving society, then at this juncture its management would be taken over with employees continuing to be paid, and passengers served. Pending offloading routes and planes to other companies, or as a reduced company. People who become unemployed are still citizens who need to support society as a whole and its economy. Entrepreneurs serve society and do not own it.
