Charles Manson and free will

If Charles Manson was entirely responsible for the actions of 'family' then why were they also imprisoned?
If we have 'free will' then why was Manson imprisoned?
'Ooh, I couldn't help slaughtering seven complete strangers in their own homes because my 'daddy' told me to do it'. Pathetic.
Interesting, and ironic in a sick way, that the killers 'found God' in prison, when being subservient to a 'god' was what supposedly 'forced their hand' in the first place.
Predictably Manson's 'family' were all from religious backgrounds.
