A Confluence and Melting Pot of Cultures
A good travelogue and documentary of Sicilian history is currently on TV
It is seen as a confluence of cultures and a melting-pot. But there is a problem here. It was what it was because of being a fairly small place, at the centre of much more vast areas of cultures. There was a continuous input from them to maintain the variety, that would otherwise have ended in a mixing of culture into a new composite culture. It was ruled by allowing separate cultures to be independent, as autonomous societies. Only combined in one by a mere rule of law and order over those social groups. If there had been Rights of Man, focused instead on individuals rather than groups, there would of necessity have been one overall ethic leaving the various social groups freedom only in innocuous culture – Altruism at best. The whole world as a melting-pot, since it would not be a confluence of anything external, could be organised on the basis of the Rights of Communities, but not the Rights of Men.

The presenter's mannerisms and giggling responses to polite Sicilians workers made the programme unwatchable.
