Sensation and Sentiment and Self Knowledge
It is probable that these must all evolve in tune with each other.
Animals are distinguished from plants in having distinct bodies that can move within the external environment. Whereas a plant may be integrated with its environment quite widely and intensely.
Animals therefore need an integrated nervous system, receiving an input from the environment only, or mainly, for the purposes of navigation.
So far as that goes the mechanism might be quite robotic or mechanical with no realized sensations involved.
But the fact of an integrated body that operates cohesively, means that there are ‘messages’ distributed through the nervous system that cause a response.
Space, time, etc are not autonomous but relate together. If they were absolutely autonomous, then they would not exist for each other, and we would not exist.
The computer or brain at the centre of this system, acts so as to coordinate response to its input in a way that is advantageous to the whole system or body, otherwise the simple processes of evolution would cause it to fail in a dangerous environment.
This must mean that even the most basic robot or animal has the genesis of feeling and knowledge of sensations in order to work at all.
presumably evolution and sophistication of system brings with it that process which we call the mind, involving the whole of the system or body.
