Erastian
It is of extreme ethical importance that the Church in this country [and elsewhere] has been essentially erastian from the outset and onwards. Convert the king and the people will follow. Even in this supposedly secular age the same applies - but omit the term king. There may not be one Church imposed by authority and custom, but the core of belief in the country is determined by modern ‘democracy’ and defines the ’church’ of today. For good or ill.
But within that there is belief in ‘God’. However, there is a widespread idea of god in Olympian terms. As a super-Zeus. But this debases the idea of god. It equates with a fundamental belief in mere things, objects and creatures. We have faith in a person, because of what he does and promotes – because we believe he is virtuous. Which means our fundamental belief must be in values of all kinds. It is how we use values that defines what we treat as virtuous.
The Christian Church of today was failed by the country and itself, in not adapting to democracy. Other than the democracy of pure personal whimsy. Religion is not separate from philosophy it is an expression of philosophy.
We may assume Jesus of Nazareth saw ‘God’ in terms of the ‘Lords Prayer’. A father figure.
One may assume that if any being has empathy, it was not created by them, but exists in its own unfathomed nature.
