All of our responses here at The PhilosophyNow Forums are automatically generated from the emotional/intellectual function within the human machine that we call ourselves.

And in philosophy, if we believe in the core of philosophy, we hope that being conscious of ourselves, as bots, we can somehow escape the fate of death. But we are already dead. There is no escape possible.

It's one way of looking at it, but not the only one.

For the sake of balance:

In the below video we can see the Trumpbot in action:

We're not like any bots that exist, though. Robots don't currently have consciousness, and we don't even know if they can.

that depends on your definition of consciousness...

I don't think it really does. No one can deny that our sense of self-awareness and feelings cannot be found in a robot, mostly because we're the ones who built robots and we admittedly don't know how to replicate it.

so the difference between the electric eye that "feels" a lack of illumination and "chooses" to turn on a light and a person doing the same is more than simply biological?

Close but no cigar. We can only put in a machine as much as we understand. Since we don't know how to emulate consciousness, there's no advertent way we can.

there are machines that roll cigars too...

we emulate consciousness one task or step at a time...

consciousness... a series of decisions followed by a series of decisions... have you ever written a computer program?

"parts of consciousness" is not consciousness.

We can't fully replicate the human brain with mechanical engineering or even synthetic biology, how about that?

I am not suggesting that we need to replicate the human brain...

all I am suggesting is that there are degrees of consciousness...

and not all humans have similar consciousness...

I can concede to that, and see what you're saying.

Really I'm not even just talking about the human brain (though I know I brought it up specifically) but the consciousness of animals in general. We can't replicate the same level of self-awareness that we see even in an insect.
