Normally eye-pleasing men are described as handsome while eye-pleasing women are described as beautiful, words that have similar meanings, yet terms that are normally applied to specific genders. Looking up etymologies wasn't helpful in this area.

This is the age of PC, yet these archaic practices persist.
I'm wondering how many terms with similar meanings are gender specific as I've just shown. And does this cause problems?

The convention is that men are described as handsome and women are described as beautiful
Women describe men as beautiful too although no woman will ever be described as handsome
