Craigslist is a now world-wide classified website whose development basically parallels the development of The Digital Revolution that we are now right in the middle of.
Before The Digital Revolution, before Craigslist, the main source of revenue of all major local newspapers throughout the world was their individual classified section.
Then Craigslist appeared. Within twenty-five years EVERY major world-wide newspaper publication was financially gutted or completely put out of business because of the loss of revenue of their individual classified section.
The comparatively few newspapers that exist today can support very little local reporting and no real reporting of any national, political, or business news. They are unable to meet even the most basic payroll.
News stories are now dictated to underpaid newspaper interns by the source spokesman of the actual intended story. Then those news releases are copy & pasted repeatedly without question or editorial filter.
Thus, the rise of Fake News. News that isn’t news. News that is really unfiltered public relation campaigns by mega wealthy corporations or mega wealthy individuals or the most well financed political party of each country.
I mean, yeah, actual disaster reporting still exists, if it bleeds it leads, along with sports & entertainment. But the fat has been trimmed even in these departments & continues to be trimmed. Why? The Digital Revolution; Craigslist.
Why Craigslist? Because Craigslist offers a much faster classified posting experience. A better, more full-bodied classified experience with more information available on every item along with color pictures. And Craigslist is free to use. All you need is a computer & internet access.
So, Craig Newmark created a better mousetrap at a much better price and the world beat a path to his door.
Ultimately the marketplace decided. Instinctively. Inevitably.
Craigslist was never advertised. Craigslist spread from San Francisco to over 70 countries now solely by word of mouth.
Craig Newmark never set-out to disrupt the entire news industry but he did. And continues to do so.
Now we; ALL OF US need to deal with fake news. Now each of us must filter and determine, from the news we are given, what is real - for us.
This is disruptive. This is a true revolution for our entire humanity.
As a living, breathing philosopher you are now forced to question and re-shuffle the very essence of your entire being; What is real? What is fake? What is truth? What will it take to make it out alive within this human revolution?
