Miserable is not all that bad sometimes. Matter-of-fact being miserable in a certain contained way can be a source of power. Motivation.

An edge, that helps an individual obtain things that they may not be able to obtain in a normal, satisfied state.

I thought that Bhutan was the most happy state on earth.

How do you measure the happiness in a country ?
By the number of suicides per capita ?
By how long people feel joy every day ?

How about the US ?
Would California be the happiest state in the US ?

I'd say the protocol would be Democratic Socialism. Yeah. Definitely. Doing a quick scan of the top ten happiest countries they all have implemented more generous forms of Democratic Socialism and Liberal Democracy than the United States. Hey, thanks for bringing this to our attention!

OUZO, THE ULTIMATE GAME, has an Olympic torch similar to the one above, positioned inside the U of Ouzo and rising above it.

Well, there's lies, damned lies and statistics. If you look at the breakdown (p 20 for those unlikely to read the whole report), the criteria are as follows:
GDP per capita. Who says money doesn't make you happy? The US is slightly ahead at this point. Can't argue with the figures, but then the US has the greatest disparity of wealth distribution of any developed country. So while Bill Gates et al may be happier than a couple of major cities on average, there's a lot of bums and trailer trash that balance it out.
Social support. Not a lot in it, but the UK slightly edges that one.
Healthy life expectancy. Yep. This one puts the UK firmly in the lead. It is a fact that Americans die younger and fatter than Brits, but the UK is doing its damnedest to sink to US levels.
Freedom to make life choices. Again, nothing in it. The main difference is that in the US, if you choose to be head of state, all you need is a few hundred million dollars. Over here, getting to be king or queen involves wiping out all the opposition, which wouldn't be cheap either.
Generosity. Another one where there's not much to choose; the UK edges it and draws slightly further into the lead.
Perceptions of corruption. Not a good one for the US, they score barely half the UK points on this one, which is ironic, since...
Dystopia...is the only category, other than GDP, in which the US is in clear water ahead of the UK. Evidently Americans believe that a country that tolerates massive economic inequality is a good thing and that imprisoning a greater percentage of its citizens than any planet on Earth is something to be proud of. It's the American dream.
Confidence interval. Again, too close to call, but the race is already over, thanks to the US dystopia sprint.
Anyway, fuck it; thanks to Brexit, I am returning to my Dutch roots.
