We cannot say that Barnaby is typically English because Lewis and Vera are different.
What´s the special charm of Barnaby ?
The series does not make you feel depressed, not really.
Although some hideous crimes are committed.
Those who like to watch this series what do you think the attraction of it is ?

Don´t you think that the music sounds like a lulliby ?
At least the tune in the beginning and at the end.
It´s in major and not in minor, I guess, and therefore positive.

It's so bad that it's good.

Thanks, Harb.
The music is like from an operetta, the story is like from a fairy tale in which bad things happen but which ends well.
It is hilarious often, it even makes you laugh sometimes, but it is never slapstick.

It doesn't take itself too seriously and the village scenery is breath-taking. It's not good without Barnaby though.

I vastly prefer Neil Dudgeon to John Nettles. I hope saying that doesn't constitute blasphemy.

Not blasphemy--just a complete lack of good taste

And you don't like it anyway.

Maybe I've got some American ancestry, although if I have, I don't suppose it can go back very far.

I used to watch it, so there must have been something about it that I liked. Actually, I tend not to like anything with murder in it. I think I would have preferred it if it had been Midsommer shopliftings, or something like that.

Me too, but the Midsomer murders are cartoonish with almost no gore and no one seems to get terribly concerned about them.

Well, as soon as you are told that the murder was committed at Weasel's Folly or Hedgehog's Grotto, it's not easy to take it very seriously. I can never understand why it takes Barnaby so long to solve the crime. It's simply a matter of looking at all the characters, deciding which one is the least likely to have done it and then just arresting them.

The atmosphere is relaxed instead of full of tension and stress and fear and anxiety.
The music in the beginning is sort of eerie but not excessively so. Does anyone know who composed it ?
Watching the film is like being in a spa, you immerse yourself in a fairy tale and have a good time.
It´s not really a comedy but it is not serious either.

Interesting. Apparently it uses an unusual instrument called a theremin. I always thought it was a singer lol.

The music in the beginning is a waltz, isn´t it ?
Perhaps that´s why it puts the audience in a magical and dreamy mood.
If people suffer from high blood pressure but still like a little bit of tension then Barnaby is good because it reminds you not to take the story too seriously.
If you suffer from very high blood pressure then crime stories of Cherstorton could be the right ones for you because it turns out in the end that nobody was killed at all, everything was a misunderstanding and can be explained nicely.

I don't know if you can get a Canadian series called Murdoch Mysteries. It has everything you could wish for and more. Possibly the best thing I've seen on television. I'm hooked. (It even has an excellent theme tune

)
