I have found that humans are selfish, mean, & stupid.

...and there is no escape.

Ever thought it might be you?

Or maybe just your culture.

Humans are mean violent and selfish. Not all of them, but give them the chance to thrive and they are racist pricks too.

Give them the chance and conditions to do the opposite and they often do it as well.

To 'study' you have to do more than drink ale for 61 years.

Sounds ideal! Why would anyone want to escape?

Humans aren't really 'anything'. They tend to do whatever they can get away with, depending on how much power they have, or who happens to have the power. Compare for example the behaviour of cops in an evolved, enlightened society with those in a Police State. Yes I'm a cynic. But is it cynicism if it's true? You can tell when an organisation has a good boss, who values customers. If the staff don't give a shit, then you know the boss will be the same. Were those who flocked to hanging, drawing and quarterings evil psychopaths? Not really. They did it because it was acceptable practise and they enjoyed it immensely.

Kinda sounds like you are describing:

I have found that humans are selfish, mean, & stupid.

...and there is no escape.

Or perhaps most humans aren't very thoughtful or self aware. They need to have their cruelty pointed out to them by those who aren't thoughtless. Isn't that what philosophers do? Psychopaths are a different matter. They don't give a shit about others no matter what.

The word empathy comes to mind. We might be moving toward the definition of empathy.

Don't know if meaningful philosophers even exist any more...or if they have any meaningful influence upon anyone.

I maintain that TRUE philosophers, REAL philosophers have moved beyond the written word.

I think philosophers have been passed-up upon the evolutional branch. I maintain that if individuals are writing books in 2016 they are estranged from a certain reality. Estranged from interactive debate.

Written words are important. They are able to focus us. But empathy seems as if it is more emotional.

People talk the talk.

Few, VERY few, walk the walk.

You did not happen to also find out WHY you are selfish, mean & stupid also, did you?

If you did, then you would know how to escape.

A person can study all sorts of things for any number of years -- coming to (and evolving through) all sorts of crazy-ass conclusions and built-up ideas -- and still end up no more aware than when they started.

To try to equate one's number of years with wisdom or truth is meaningless. There are small children light-years beyond us in their understanding and awareness. I think awareness is more meaningful than study because studying/learning (although valuable for certain purposes) can be interpreted, distorted, and manipulated in so many inconsistent and limited ways... while awareness in the moment doesn't need to feed the ego, nor rely on made-up structures/limitations.

Agreed. You added a well constructed and extremely well articulated post.

Thank you for participating.
