Salt lick

It's been said that dogs like to lick humans for their salt. I don't quite buy this for these two reasons:

1) I've had a dog try to stick his tongue down one of my pants pocket so no salt there.

2) I would expect in a dog's normal diet that he would get his daily requirement of salt. So why the interest in licking me?

Any further thoughts on this?

Well, to answer 1, the dog might have said to himself "you never know. Those humans keeps all kind of sh*t in those holes in their trousers, so why not some nice salt?".
But moving to 2, we will not know for sure until brain research gets more advanced. My best guess is that the salt is a nice bonus.
