How responsible is news reporting on breakthroughs?

There's been a number of articles about cancer cures and breakthroughs in the past six months (though few recently). Most are tied to a cancer conference as it turned out.
This article takes a level-headed look at the announcements. There is some interpretation involved as to what constitutes a breakthrough. The philosophical question would be how much progress have we made on cancer (or any other medical problem?) And what's around the corner? Here's an article:
