Do What Matters

If you keep doing things that don’t matter to you, then when will you have the time to do the things that really do?

I love this quote because most of us are busy doing things that don’t matter and at the end, we do not have any time to do things that truly matter.

What is it that truly matters? What truly matters is who we are and why we are here. What is the purpose of life? What should we do? What should we achieve? The true purpose of life is to find out who we are. But instead of finding out who we are and why we are here and then moving on and ahead, we are so caught in samsaar, in this world, we are so distracted and diffused, that we are unable to contemplate, reflect, introspect and concentrate on God, the Creator, the supreme Power. By not doing so, we continue to do things which are irrelevant, and therefore by doing things which are irrelevant, we are left with no time for relevant things.

We have to reverse this. We have to stop doing things that don’t matter, so that we start doing things that matter. What matters is to build a relationship with the power that gave us life; what matters is for us to go back to the source we came from; what matters is for us to realize that we are not this body but the divine spirit within. And what matters is not to just realize that we are the divine spirit within, but to live as the liberated spirit – that is what matters. But instead of trying to do what matters, we do things that don’t matter.
Of course we all like to be entertained, who doesn’t? But we spend so much of our life being entertained that at the end of it all, apart from being entertained we have nothing else. Some people may ask: what is wrong in being entertained? Of course, there is nothing wrong in being entertained. The only problem is that the time that was used in being entertained was not used in understanding and achieving the purpose of life. The purpose of life is to realize God and we must stop doing things that don’t matter, so that we can do this one thing that truly matters and that is, to realize God.

Every person on the planet, no matter their state of mind
No matter how unobscured their awareness
Whether or not they are enlightened
No matter what they do
Every person on the planet
Does what they must do.

So what does that say?

It doesn’t tell you much about yourself, except as self-justification for any crap thing you know that you are doing. Self-cherishing is a misuse of this truth.

The proper use is in understanding that because everyone does what they must do, every crap thing that is done by a human being, had to be done.

Imagine yourself doing some horrible thing. Say, something you’ve heard in the news. Don't say you couldn’t imagine yourself doing that. You can imagine, it's different than doing (but connected, so don't take imagining lightly). Imagine the immense suffering that doing the horrible thing would cause to so many, and certainly to you. You could not be a human being after doing that thing, and all you’ve ever known is being human.

Now look at the idiot who really did the horrible thing, in the light of the truth that, every person on the planet does what they must do. With Life as the measure, what he has done, makes him no longer human.

What a pickle to be in. Teach your children well.

I speak from experience when I say that doing what matters, as you have described, is the most entertaining thing in the world.

Lost me at God. Also, you ask us questions then answer for us, as if to say there's no other outcome for peace, unless you're being condescending. The crux of your entire argument is obedience to a primitive way of reasoning, and hasn't much to do with biology (e.g., what is it that truly matters? What truly matters is who we are and why we are here. What is the purpose of life? [snip] ...introspect and concentrate on God, the Creator, the supreme Power.)

I understand your frustration but assigning either blame or praise to the actions of man, as means of not/accepting God, is as destructive to the human psyche as the Muslim who blows up him/herself in a crowded marketplace, in allegiance to Allah. There's no +/- gain when it comes to religion: Everyone is right and no one is wrong, depending on region.
Of course, there is nothing wrong in being entertained. The only problem is that the time that was used in being entertained was not used in understanding and achieving the purpose of life.
The reason I stomp my work gloves out before putting them on, isn't because I identify with poisonous spiders on a spiritual level, it's because I can't afford the hospital bill if bitten and made seriously sick.

Some are bright and intelligent enough to see a purpose in life, some a not very bright and can't see any, thus they are caught in Samara.

Hex my man, don’t worry about them.

Everyone has a purpose. The body does not move without a purpose. You don’t wiggle a little finger without a purpose.

For those so inclined, eventually it comes down to one purpose. Some people actually vow to never move again until they get this purpose thing settled for themselves. Literally. Some have gracie smile upon them, such as Buddha.

This reveals the nature of movement, and purpose, in terms of the one life over which you have full administrative control.

You speak straight out of your ass, I see all these cozy chatters on various philosophy fora, and they spend years upon years discussing exactly nothing, they only sit there babbling and raving all day and night to have a cozy chat and feel self important, to be indulged etc. Exactly like you!

Hex the man. The Hammer. Billy the Hammer, victim of his own innocence from the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Looks like about 4 years for you, about the same amount of time it takes to earn a college degree. I join you in commiserating over your found purpose. Shifting your inertia will happen when it must, cause you can’t stay this way forever. Ain’t that a kick in the head.

If you said intelligent things I might feel it as a kick in my head, but since it's complete random nonsense and babble, then I can't take it serious.

Found 100h waste time per sales person, etc, etc, I know what I'm talking about.

What do you mean by "to find out who we are"? Do you mean the purpose of life is personal development? Studying the nature? If so, what does god have to do with this?

He just said something intelligent and relevant, to wit, why have you wasted four years saying the same thing over and over again?

Hey there Hex. I look forward to your serious and thoughtful postings, to perhaps joining in for an informative chat and drinking from the fountain of intelligence that you initially mention in the judo thread ... the kind of intelligence that doesn’t get one mauled. That’s a useful intelligence because getting mauled must be painful, a kitten once mauled my hand so I can imagine, I still have scars. I have a feeling that what you have gone through in your trials and tribulations has given you the steady perspective to get the job done in the past.

Jim Carrey humorously captures the poetic magic and magistery of your metaphor in his quest for a mint, and from your past, I would bet you’re either a huge fan of the man, or no fan.
