This is not news.

This is more like suppressed information. Media only report what is sexy. GW, and environmental disaster is sexy, the idea that GW might be a good idea is no so interesting. Additionally GW as a danger and the global control of carbon use is part of the Corporate paradigm.

They were warning us of the overdue IceAge, in the 1970s, just before the GW, and other Green issues were becoming more popular.
As an Archaeologist i've been well aware the the last glacial maximum was 18kbp, and the end of the last "ice-age" was 10kbp. In the 90s when I studied the Palaeolithic, we were all well aware of the possible benefits of GW to stave off the inevitable.

Do you think this comes down to a choice between Scylla and Charybdis or damned if you do or damned if you don't?

I think it just means that there are massive forces way beyond our control, but human arrogance makes us think that we are the cause of every thing and so have the ability to control everything - when this is errant bullshit. It massages our ego. We love to think that we have caused GW, and will clutch at straws to confirm that diagnosis.
