I don't know how to reconcile not being able to convince someone without the threat of death with living in a progressive nation. So I concede that I do not live in a progressive nation.

If your not terrified of mass murder, then you don't realize how similar you are to those who are being killed.

Nicely put.

No system made by human beings is utterly foolproof (though some are more reliable than others). Therefore if the death penalty is used, some innocent people will be killed by mistake. Quite a few people condemned to death in the US have later been exonerated and released. Presumably some aren't exonerated in time. Therefore if you live in a country with the death penalty, then even if you are a completely upstanding citizen and never commit a crime, there is always some danger that you will be put to death by the state as a result of accident or malice.

In fairness though, statistically this chance is probably quite low. The chances of being run down and killed by a car must be many times higher.
