As soon as I see the word 'gotten' I dismiss the entire piece as uneducated bullshit. See how important good use of language is?

Your promo, "Why Philosophers are Scum" necessarily delineates that each and every philosopher participates in this sort of activity. On this basis your thread is baseless. Unless of course you can show that each and every academic philosopher participates in this sort of behavior.

What you need to show is that philosophy departments are over represented in this respect. That is to say, philosophy departments are overrepresented compared to any other organization that exercises a position of trust in relation to young people (academic or otherwise).

I would suggest this is not possible.

I believe it to highly likely that philosophy departments have proportionally more of this sort of problem than others. Secondly, what difference does it make? One incident is bad enough.

Possibly. Can you supply the figures?

I don't know how to get such figures, and besides, many incidents may go unreported. This is obviously not the sort of thing that universities want to be widely known.

I agree with that. So i guess that's the end of this thread. Unless you want to add further speculation.

Why do you say that? I want everyone on here to stop worshipping philosophy professors. They are scum.

I say this because the title of your thread says that each and every philosophy professor is scum. That cannot possibly be true because I know at least one philosophy professor who isn't scum. Therefore, the title of your thread must be false.

No one should be 'worshipped'. I take 'sexual harassment' claims with a bit of a grain of salt these days. I've heard the same thing about physics departments, atheist conventions etc. etc. Apparently they are all full of rampaging sex maniacs and rapists. Unfortunately the term has been so over-used that it has become meaningless, just as many other previously useful words and phrases have.

I don't know what young people say, but when you produce such a declarative statement it is taken as a universal or particular. Your statement "Philosophers are scum" has no particular signifier, so it is taken to mean "All philosophers are scum".
