It is a danger I think. It reminds me of deindividuation in football supporters, when they basically chant racist and homophobic stuff because they are just a face in the crowd. Anonymity can create trolls of us if we have emotional issues and use the internet to offload rage and aggression

There is a feeling of powerlessness and lack of recognition for the individual in an industrial society, especially for the 'faceless' urban drone. Male ones are generally more irked by this than female, but it's by no means an exclusively male phenomenon. Role-playing does satisfy some of the emotional needs, and allows for a degree of experimentation that their real life doesn't, much as a masked ball used to in the 18th century. I don't suppose actors, singers and athletes need interweb personas: they get to perform to an audience in real life.
Secondly, there is a fashion abroad now for emotionalism. Venting, or catharsis (letting it all out) is considered healthy - even if you have no cause for pent-up feelings. Television cameras love maudlin sentimentality, weeping, rage, despair expressed in public. The audience then learns this as "normal" behaviour and imitates it. But of course, most people can't behave that way at work, or with their children, or in school - nothing would function if everyone went about behaving like infants.
So they try on their Mr. Hyde faces alone, at night, at their computers. It does less harm out there in cyberland than it would in real life.
I wonder if the real-life Group W bench residents go on line as the Sugar Plum Fairy.

If you have your priorities straight, everything else works itself out. If you self-identify as a philosopher you must put a primary importance on understanding Truth. You must understand it as a prerequisite for all else. If you legitimately care about truth, understanding, wisdom, you'll find ways to turn the conversation productive or move on to one that is. But "more often than not" people don't have their priorities straight, even or especially philosopers.

If you have your priorities straight, everything else works itself out. If you self-identify as a philosopher you must put a primary importance on understanding Truth. You must understand it as a prerequisite for all else. If you legitimately care about truth, understanding, wisdom, you'll find ways to turn the conversation productive or move on to one that is. But "more often than not" people don't have their priorities straight, even or especially philosopers.
