Interesting.

Never heard of 'experimental philosophy'...

<<This is what experimental philosophy sets out to do. Make up stories that pose philosophical questions, and ask people from all sorts of backgrounds for their intuitive reactions. Ask whether Bob knows. It turns out that people from western backgrounds tend to say Bob does not know, but people from east and south Asian backgrounds tend to say that he does know>>

Have I got this right - it is about posing fictional philosophy questions and then asking for intuitive reactions from people around the world?
So, 'westerners' tend to intuit that Bob doesn't know and 'easterners' tend to say that he does.
Really? Who says? Is this a porkie production ?

Either Richard Baron is getting better explaining things so that I can understand or I am getting better at understanding Philosophy!

(Personally, I think Richard has come along way! )

Loved the article and thank you, Philosophy Now.

AS: Either Richard Baron is getting better explaining things so that I can understand or I am getting better at understanding Philosophy!

M: No 'Either/Or' about it, AS - but both. Every day in every way, PN people just keep getting better and better :D

I picked this for discussion, leaving a first response - but nowhere to be seen, probably still being assessed...
Re-entering the fray. Up for a bit of a 'cozy chat'

..a dog chasing it's own tail!

It's an artificial problem, and exactly why philosophers are in so little demand out there. Science doesn't really deal in "truths" anymore exactly of this problem.

Truths are only used by people lacking rationality or being desperate.

Well, I think truths are a lot more interesting to chase that tails. The very reason you and I are able to have this conversation is because someone tried finding a solution to a problem.

With reference to the article:
What exactly is an artificial problem?
What 'truths' are you referring to?

Perhaps it depends on what 'truth' or tale you are chasing. It does seem that philosophy sets itself 'new' programmes so that the circle of wonder never ends...

I guess it's quite profitable for some. Amazon review and price worth looking at. I might be tempted to read it...if free.

You don't have a fucking clue, not about the problem, not about anything.

Do you actually comprehend the article?

You're not being rational. You do realize you're chasing your own tail posting nonsense.

You have no history in understanding me enough to know what I am talking about. Best to be silent. :)

I've worked in the quality department of a big newspaper, I understand that people like to speak nonsense and babble like you do and confuse it with great wisdom.

Being intelligent is the path to wisdom, thus one can solve problems, and predict outcome of great million dollar projects, something that you will never achieve.

It is funny to me that you complain of chasing tails and yet you want to continue this conversation about this article. Lol

It's even more funny that you are continuing it with someone who had no idea of philosophy before she stumbled upon this magazine years ago.

What's even more funny is the fact that I was just commenting on how far I have come since way back when Richard used to post in here. I never understood his philosophical jargon....so it was especially difficult for me....with my learning disability!

So good for you....you Have it all. Some of us are not so lucky to be blessed with intelligence and simply get excited when we can finally follow a writer who we used to admire.

Besides, the comment was just for Richard anyway. Just a little note to say hi is all.

Hi M,

I can't imagine anything being more meaningless and boring that chasing one's own tail. But then, I've never been a dog...sooo....

Hi AS, my earlier posts didn't appear until after your chat with Hex. The joys of pre-moderation and acceptance into PN paradise.
If you don't mind, I'll scoot the personal stuff over into my 'RE- introduction' because my post is all alone out there and needs company.
Yeah, I know - how very sad
