I found a cheap second-hand copy of Benjamin Jowett's translations of the complete works of Plato recently.
Are they considered OK to work from for an academic study?

I was reading somewhere that Jowett had censored Plato quite a bit when it comes to homosexuality.
i.e. That Jowett "bowdlerized" Plato - as the term seems to be: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bowdler

Thoughts?

Are there common criticism of Jowett?

What are the canonical translations these days? Do such things exist?

I had started a similar thread a while back about The Republic on which Jowett vs Bloom was a bit controversial.
