A thread is only as good as the membership

I can take the same thread (title and OP), place it on different forums and get various responses. Some threads start off slow and then come on like gangbusters while others have the opposite effect.

What do you think makes for a good thread?

As you say, a great deal depends on the culture of the site. I'm not familiar enough with this site to make good predictions on the subject but the most active threads tend to be those on which most people have an opinion and there is some controversy.
