What Was Your Motivation to Have Children?

Take away the accidental impregnation.

Remove the social, religious, & family pressure bullshit...Why would any of us have children?

What if ALL legal reproductions of humans would be initially done in a medical facility?

Human traits would be developed and stored & used as deemed needed by a internationally recognized communal institution.

There no longer would be tribal, ethnic, or racial boundaries. Just one human race.

Why did you have children?

Was it motivation or accident?

Neither. I thought about it, decided not to make more humans, then took the necessary precautions.
Raised two children whom others had carelessly produced, and found that a sufficiently worthwhile experience to see how it might motivate some people.
Brave New World hadn't quite got the hang of that; I think we rather like both the prospect and the process of training new members for our tribes.

Good on you.

You are a noble man
young Sir.

Thank you for going above & beyond your inherent responsibilities.

If only your morality could be driven into the heads of more individuals. The world would have been a better place...

All the best...

Or a Brave New World.

I was motivated to make my partner happy.

I also discovered two bonuses, one, a surprising unexpected existential release or lightness due to a "Ah! That's the point!" revelation upon seeing my child, the other was the biggest damn rush of ecstatic happiness bar none in my life upon the same moment.

So, in a word, your motivation was selfish.

That's not bad. Selfishness is what motivates us to do 99% of ALL our actions.

Well done.

I am glad you reproduced.

The world would be a better place - not saying sane and happy, mind you, just better than it currently is - if people made a conscious choice about reproductions. Imagine! Everybody who wants to make little people, free to do so; nobody who doesn't want to coerced to do it anyway. Wouldn't that be an improvement?

COMPLETELY agree with you.

The world population of humans has increased almost 3 fold in the LAST 200 YEARS!

From 1 billion to over 7 BILLION people in the past 200 YEARS.

When you look at a timeline of the world's population we are on a nearly STRAIGHT UP line.

Er? No Bill, not sure what world you live in but making another happy is not generally considered a selfish act in mine. I can understand it is in yours as yours is all about you isn't it.
That's not bad. Selfishness is what motivates us to do 99% of ALL our actions.
No Bill, self-interest is a great motivator but selfishness can be counter-productive to this and interestingly enough what one decides is in ones self-interest may not necessarily be what one would like.
Well done.

I am glad you reproduced.
Save your false platitudes, I didn't do it for you

I don't think it is noble to reproduce.

I believe it is selfish.

Whatever happiness you think a new being brings to the world is necessarily offset by the equal amounts of pain, suffering, and feelings of hopelessness that ALL humans must experience.

...but, having said that, I am NOT making a direct statement to you. I'm sure you are an exception.

Who said anything about nobility? I said it was about happiness.
I believe it is selfish.
You believe many things but that doesn't make them true.

Boo hoo. Not much of a Buddhist are you. It's got bugger all to do with bringing happiness to this notional 'world' of yours and everything to do with the individuals involved. That you think the way you do is just your false front to cover your selfishness in wishing the world to be just about you.
...but, having said that, I am NOT making a direct statement to you. I'm sure you are an exception.
An exception to what numbnuts, your fantastical beliefs?

Seriously, Bill, you have shown images of people suffering in ways that most of us will never experience. You cannot possibly sustain any argument that we all suffer equally.

We do not suffer equally. Or in the same ways.
