Now I'm an old gamer, started out at Atari 2800, played loads of games over the years, and with time they only got more complex, with more bugs and glitches.

To simulate an entire Galaxy is a daunting task, and I'm sure the eggheads models are filled with bugs and glitches, why it should be open source so it may become less ridden with bad things, besides then more minds can come up with ideas to how the Galaxy are held together.
I'm not really into this "Dark Energy/Matter theory" there must be other more simpler explenations.

Elite 2 simulated every planet in the Galaxy, along with all the known stars exactly in the locations they should be, which is quite impressive considering the vast size of the catalogue of known stars in the Galaxy, I expect the new Elite 4: Elite:dangerous will actually contain an at least fairly accurate star map of all the known and designated stars so I'd keep your eyes open.

the problem with modelling our galaxy is that we are on the same plane as it is, so it's hard to see the wood for the trees and indeed it would be easier to map Andromeda which we can see in full than The Milky Way, incidentally in about 4 billion years or so we are going to collide with Andromeda although Earth will be practically uninhabitable by then as the sun will have heated up by a considerable amount, even so it should be some light show.

The only contending theory I know of which has any legs is MoND Modified Newtonian Dynamics which means that r^2 in the gravity equation is not necessarily linear and may well decrease at vast distances according to a more non linear model.

Both solutions are really just fiddling around with the masses involved or the distances though.
