NASA are so up there with the best researchers in the world, that really is what it is all about, pity they have to take direction from politicians but meh nothing's perfect.

This is what would happen to all science if politicians ruled all science. America is of course not the only culprit.

good link i laughed.science needs the bean counters and power types.
we went to moon for cost in 1969 for cost of ONE b52 strategic air wing. which now litters dumps in arizona.
this is why i cal jfk a hero. his imagination survived and went past the gobblygook of politics.

I quite agree. Shame they shot the only man in the 20th century who was actually on the right page...

Personally NASA and the German rocket scientists have been a hinderance as Dyson was the way to go.

Orion is one way to go. As are fusion bottles.
But this is leading edge tech.
I suggest we learn to crawl before we walk or run. Chemical engines are relatively cheap tech compared to Orion and fission-fusion type drives.
And basically you need the tech to get components of say an Orion ship into orbit for assembly.
[technically you could launch an Orion from planetary surface. But a pillar of 20-30 Hiroshimas to get ship to orbital velocity would be rather
unfortunate for local environment]
Von Braun was a simple shortcut that saved US 5+ years of development. His history in development of V2 is morally dubious .
The OP was thruster/computer interface tech. [lead by comp tech and materials tech]

Since they gave the US rocket technology and put the first man on the moon
I don't think you can chastise German scientists, Dyson on the other hand is just one of many original thinkers.
Frankly you might as well say Einstien was of no use to science...
"I am become death, destroyer of worlds."
Bhagavadgītā (Bhagavad Gita).
J.R.Oppenheimer et al were just plebs.
Of course the military applications of such art...

Luckily the Russians did indeed love their children too.

Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet.
We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.
