500 000 is a huge exaggeration, but yes, a lot of people died, about a quarter of a million (of all ages) is the highest serious account, and as all wars do, it also prematurely ended other lives that were natural causes, and impoverished the entire nation and its people (in many more ways than just monetary... if your workplace is destroyed, it doesn't matter if the government makes shitloads of cash on selling oil, because you can't support the supply and demand chain and your life is set back years or at worst never recovers... when this happens to an entire nation, the number of goods and the access to goods and quality goods that people have in the country sharply declines).
The siege of Baghdad was most horrific. I still don't understand how soldiers can shell civilian neighbourhoods, and what they are thinking as they virtually "flip a coin" on who's going to die because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time... whether it's a man, a grandfather, a mother, a young woman who has just attained adulthood, or a little boy that will never experience puberty.
That anyone is willing to do that, especially when they have such the upper hand, is unbelivable and makes you wonder how many bad people there really are in the US and the UK and other countries that pursue such extreme aggressive strategies and tactics in warfare. It's beneath human dignity, absolutely: extreme pathology of the mind, extreme psychopathy.
