The Self and Self-Knowledge

I believe self is to be understood as the collection of all mental states of any individual excluding the contributions from his conditioned mind and the real self is the collection of all mental states including those contributions .
So self-knowledge is the understanding of the real self .
And both selves can be the objects of consciousness.
