One way to avoid it is to get detached, to avoid entering into emotional resonance.
I leave my home and enter a cinema. Anything outside of my castle is a movie which I see, like in cinema. Without geting involved.

Bullying can be the reason for wide spread depression among people in the civilized world.
In the stone age people would just kill each other and that´s it.
In a civilized world you swallow the meanness or fight back with meanness and slowly develop cancer and anxieties which lead to a depression.

One possibility:
either you bully yourself or others bully you, tertium non datur.
Or is there a further option ?

.
Is there a reason that you brought-up this particular subject here?
Do you have a specific story to share? A philosophical insight?

This is only useful if you use it to change your future response to the outcome you would prefer.

Stop bullying yourself and stand-up to bullies or bully yourself to stand-up to bullies or tell someone that can do something about it that you think you are being bullied or change the situation and move away from the bullies or...?

What makes you think that I bully myself ?
I feel like drowning in a sea of disgust.
A rock one can cling to is a ritual at bed time, a phone call, full of non-bullying elements.
Then you are ready for the arms of Hypnos.

The movie "Shakespeare in Love".
Indulge in sweet word creations. Feelings and moods will follow.

My mistake, I read this "either you bully yourself " wrongly. I now understand you meant it as 'either you are a bully yourself'. Apologies.
So whilst I think the rest of what I said still stands, an answer to, 'either you bully others or others bully you', is to not bully others and stand-up to the bully as this is not bullying.

You have to stand-up to bullies, win or lose, else it just goes on and on.

Arm yourself with what ever you know shall put the bully in their place. Different bullies require different weapons. Sometimes it can just be knowledge, as you impart via your words, and in others it's a Law enforcement agency. Of course you could always take matters in your own "hands," but that can be extremely risky. Just prepare yourself for the next time you may encounter them. I gave my wife pepper spray, just in case, she encounters a threat? It's the same stuff that the police in the US use, very nasty stuff. Though I'm glad she's never had to use it.

Thank you Spheres of Balance.
So standing-up to bullies is taking up a fight with them.
And if you are disgusted by the sort of fight they want to involve you in ?
Framing, scheming, lying, fake friendliness, intensive poisonous friendliness to make you lose self-control ....
There seems to be bullying everywhere.
Even in John Le Carré´s novels.
Even on a forum like this one.
On another forum a man kept talking to me although I tried to ignore him. I couldn´t stand the hate he expressed towards me. Why he hated me he never said and I never asked. So I finally decided to leave.
But in real life you cannot just leave.

Fine example of bullying.
Actually, perhaps this is what he wanted you to do. Leave.
Whereas, would it not have been wiser to stay, bullies of this kind need feed back and most probably would have backed off, eventually, considering his source of irritation gave him no succor to sustain his hate. You can always revisit the Forum and start posting again, whilst ignoring him as you did before.
Treat it as an interesting exercise, with a view to analysing the outcome.

Oh yes you can and never forget that.
