Why does one want to be smart ?

Because it is a thrill to hear a well-made box close with a "click" ?

I've made some of those, and yes it is.

So have I.

But it does not make everyone sufficiently happy though. Or give everyone enough joy of staying alive.

Could it be that some people run after these "clicks" like rats in a running cage ?
Because some area in the brain gets a certain stimulus ?

Just a thought, perhaps they run after the click, and overlook the box?

Once I made a jewlery box, for a girlfriend, out of Mahogany shaped like a mushroom with a handle that was a small cast metal dragon. I made the hinge so it would lift up and then back and nothing would show when it was closed.

I used the well-made box and the click it makes as a metaphore for the moment of understanding something essential.
I have not coined this metaphore, D. F. Wallace did, or some of his friends.

Is being smart something to aspire to no matter what ?

Dostoyevsky introduces the concept of a holy idiot, who is close to a genius. I hope to learn more about this mode of existence in "Brothers Karamazov".
