Hi. Wow. Do you all suck at philosophy!? Every thread seems to descend into an egoistic shouting match. I admit I may have missed an original thought on a significant issue, but I doubt it! HG!

You have obviously been visiting the wrong threads then. There are many petty squabbles, but remember what a forum is, a forum is a social group, and the people here increasingly become... whatever term there is for acquaintances that meet so often there gotta be a higher term than acquaintance. I wouldn't go as far as say friends, but certainly there is something family like about the arguing and fighting.

Welcome to the carnage! Remember that, and I say this out of personal intuition and experience: most people who go into philosophy seriously do so for the sake of some inspiration they have had, like an ideology, or narrowed interest like ethics or ontology or epistemology, or, like another pretty recent member here: logic, formal logic.

I think I myself provide some deal of originality, and while Prof is not really original per se (he takes from what he has read about elsewhere) he provides a lot of threads in the Ethical Theory section talking about a lot of things with a good deal of sophistication. On the other hand you have people like Bob and Bill where the former literally thinks of himself as a prophet of some destination which really sounds, to me, ridiculous, but to him, is quite serious, the later has an acute shortage of words and so his replies and threads are really more like guess-games than actual discussion.

Then you have a few of the observer type who joins in willing to say their opinion or make a small point but really has no aim to do anything more, that constitutes the majority of the rest, but there are also some deal of people in-between who posts ideas with some degree of sophistication or interesting angle.

All in all, you are free to challenge anyone, and I'd like to see you challenge me particularly, newbie.

Hg - that's the sort of entrance that tends to point to you becoming a stayer. Is this a place of failed trolls dumped from random corners of nether-philosophy who like best to tear each other's limbs apart like so many zombies do? Well, maybe... but its like being in a rock band that is somewhat dysfunctional but seems to knock out a few good songs nevertheless - and who cares if no one else is listening! Also, we may learn some philosophy on the way. Other philosophy forums will tend to cause you to read and read philosophy through all sorts of tempting links,references and citations. We aren't big on all that jibe but a lot of us are learning how to face philosophy TOGETHER whilst it apparently continues to topple from the heights that centuries of tradition and careful thinking have raised it to.

I think of it as an largely friendly, backstreet and sometimes rowdy old-fashioned pub. Run by a tyrannical but largely tolerant landlord who understands it takes all sorts.

So did you show up momentarily, to pick at us, feeling quite the bigger brain for it?

Or do you want to argue some position you have, as to the truth of it all?

Lead by example my friend, you can always place someone on your foes list, thereby eliminating your need to readily read their tripe, if you see it as such.

P.S. I prefer homegrown, I assume you do too.

Thanks for your replies. Notice the mods didn't contradict!!! Thank mods for no replies! First I'd like to address the last point made. I haven't internet at home. Maybe three times a week for a couple of hours. Makes me something of a sniper, but I'll do my best.
