Dancing & sleeping while Earth's populace's not learning ...

I recently read a letter to a newspaper in which the author seemed to almost beg (with a strong hint of panic in her ‘tone of voice’): “Our world has been poisoned and will ultimately die unless we use our only power, which is to come together ...”
However, I pretty much see matters as ‘a given’ when it comes to society Earth’s (perhaps imminent) future as an ecologically moderately healthy planet.
I’m convinced that Earth’s populace will eventually find ourselves at the most crucial juncture—perhaps since the Extinction Level Event which took out the dinosaurs—involving the entire quality of our existence: Either we make a 90-degree turn in one direction, favoring an absolute priority of economic and job growth, especially involving the natural resource and mineral sector(s); or we turn 90 degrees in the opposite direction, resulting in a potential world of peace, a pristine environment, no hunger or lack of other necessities of life and no incessant though needless illness and suffering.
Perhaps I’m just too cynical, but from what I’ve observed from collective humanity’s seriously flawed (to put it mildly) nature—though especially the people that a minority of us (who bother to vote) tend to place into the highest offices—we likely won’t turn in the correct direction and in time.
All of which is likely why when I see people all excited and partying it up for, it seems, the sake of enjoying life, perhaps while they can still breathe the air, I think of Midnight Oil’s 1988 hit song “Beds Are Burning”: ‘How can we dance when the earth is burning?/How can we sleep when our beds are burning?’
