But their refusal to consider supporting a restriction upon the availability of assault rifles does contribute to the death count in these cases.

Easiest solution would be to make bullets really, really, really expensive.

What is your definition of an assault rifle?

Any rifle based upon a military pattern designed for assault, generally with semi or fully automatic capabilities. I guess you could include automatic pumps in this class as well.

Fully automatic weapons are not available at gun shops, only semi-automatic weapons like pistols, so what it comes down to is that some people don't like the ferocious looks of assault rifles. Well, that's just too damn bad!

I thought that might be the case but assault rifles are semi-autos and its a false comparison as its not just the looks as assault rifles carry larger magazines and are more accurate and efficient at the job of killing people, else the military would just carry pistols in war.

I read that for a while the USA had legislation restricting certain classes of automatic weapons, but that the legislation lapsed in about 2004 and has not been renewed. Is that correct?

I don't know if that's correct or not, but it certainly could be. There are two lobbies in the U.S. that Congressmen fear: the NRA and the so-called Jewish Lobby (it's always the U.S. and Israel against the rest of the world on most issues in the United Nations).

Yes. I find it remarkable how much less insane US politics seemed as recently as during the Clinton era.

Thank you for the above link. The following sentence from the article confirms what I have said earlier: "Merely the possession of cosmetic features is enough to warrant classification as an assault weapon." What is truly insane is prohibiting a weapon based on looks and not functionality. Long live the NRA!

The NRA is not "behind" these killing. The NRA is leading the way. It is at the forefront encouraging increasibg gun use and making bucks out of increased sales.
